CUTS OF WOOD

The cut of wood influences not only appearance, but also grain movement, dimensional stability, and the overall architectural character of the floor. In reclaimed wood flooring, cuts often vary based on the age of the material and original milling methods, creating the authentic variation and character associated with antique wood.

PLAINSAWN

Screen Shot 2021-07-22 at 1.37.01 PM.png

Plainsawn wood is the most common cut used in both new and reclaimed wood flooring. This cut is produced by sawing the log through and through, rotating the board approximately 90 degrees between cuts to maximize yield and minimize waste. The result is the classic cathedral grain pattern associated with traditional hardwood flooring.

In reclaimed wood flooring, plainsawn planks often showcase dramatic grain movement, aged patina, and natural variation that enhance the historic character of the material.

RIFT SAWN

rift cut white oak-zoom.jpeg

Rift sawn wood is prized for its clean, linear grain pattern and refined contemporary appearance. The planks are sawn perpendicular to the tree’s growth rings, producing a consistent vertical grain with minimal cathedral patterning. Because of the cutting process and lower material yield, rift sawn lumber is considered one of the more premium and specialized cuts.

Commonly specified in reclaimed white oak flooring for modern architectural interiors, rift sawn wood offers enhanced dimensional stability and a more uniform aesthetic.

RIFT & QUARTERED

Screen Shot 2021-07-22 at 1.37.25 PM.png

Rift and quartered wood combines the linear appearance of rift sawn lumber with the distinctive grain character of quarter sawn material. Each log is first divided into four quarters, then sawn at carefully controlled angles where the grain intersects the face of the board at approximately 45 to 60 degrees.

This milling method creates a highly stable flooring material with balanced grain movement and a refined architectural appearance frequently specified in luxury reclaimed white oak flooring projects.

QUARTER SAWN

qswo.jpeg

Quarter sawn wood is recognized for its straight vertical grain and distinctive striped appearance. The log is first divided into quarters, then each section is sawn perpendicular to the growth rings to create a more dimensionally stable board.

Because quarter sawn lumber yields fewer wide planks and requires more labor-intensive milling, it is often considered a premium cut. In reclaimed wood flooring, quarter sawn white oak is especially valued for its historic architectural character, dimensional stability, and timeless appearance often found in traditional estates, brownstones, and landmark interiors.

WOOD TEXTURES

The natural beauty of reclaimed wood flooring is often enhanced through the preservation and application of distinctive surface textures developed over decades of aging, wear, and craftsmanship. From original saw marks and aged patina to wire brushing and time-worn finishes, texture plays a major role in defining the architectural character of reclaimed wood flooring.

WIREBRUSHED

wire-brushed-home-legend-engineered-hardwood-hl325h-64_600.jpeg

Wire brushed reclaimed wood flooring is created by brushing the surface of each plank with a hard-bristled wire brush to remove the softer wood fibers while exposing the harder grain structure beneath. This process enhances the natural texture and grain movement of reclaimed wood while creating a subtle weathered appearance.

Wire brushed textures are commonly used in reclaimed oak and reclaimed pine flooring for both modern and rustic luxury interiors.

HANDSCRAPED

home-design.jpeg

Hand scraped reclaimed wood flooring is crafted to recreate the appearance of naturally aged and gently worn antique wood floors. Through careful hand tooling, subtle variations and texture are introduced into the surface of the plank, adding warmth, movement, and old-world character.

This texture is especially popular in reclaimed wide plank flooring, historic restorations, and traditional architectural interiors.

ORIGINAL FACE

rcoak-orgface-raw-sm - Edited.jpg

Original face reclaimed wood flooring preserves the naturally aged surface of antique lumber, including historic saw marks, weathering, nail impressions, oxidation, and authentic patina developed over generations of use.

Highly sought after in reclaimed heart pine, white pine, oak, and Douglas fir flooring, original face textures create a rich sense of history and architectural authenticity impossible to replicate with newly milled wood.

HIT-SKIP

details-rc-heartpine-hit-skip - Edited (1).jpg

Hit and skip reclaimed wood flooring features a lightly textured surface where select areas of the plank are gently smoothed while portions of the original reclaimed texture remain visible. This technique balances refinement with authentic character, allowing the natural age and movement of the wood to remain part of the finished floor.

Popular in reclaimed white oak flooring, hit and skip textures are frequently specified for luxury residential interiors, modern farmhouse projects, and contemporary architectural spaces.

RESAWN

rcoak-white-resawnnat-p-sm-w255h255-3 - Edited.jpg

Resawn reclaimed wood flooring is created by cutting antique beams, timbers, and reclaimed lumber to expose fresh interior grain while preserving the historic character and density of old-growth wood. This process often reveals dramatic grain movement, circular saw marks, oxidation patterns, and rich natural variation unique to reclaimed materials.

Resawn textures are commonly specified for reclaimed oak, heart pine, and Douglas fir flooring in luxury lofts, hospitality spaces, historic restorations, and architecturally driven interiors seeking a balance between refinement and authentic reclaimed character.

TIME WORN

texture-timeworn-.jpeg

Time worn reclaimed wood flooring captures the appearance of antique floors shaped by decades—or centuries—of natural wear. Through specialized milling and finishing techniques, craftsmen recreate softened edges, aged grain patterns, and the subtle irregularities found in historic reclaimed flooring.

The result is a floor with authentic architectural depth, reclaimed character, and the timeless feeling of a surface that has evolved naturally over generations.

COLOR

ed3e7b1a14e3--CF173517-8e25aa.jpeg

Reclaimed Wood NYC offers endless color possibilities—where historic character and architectural vision come together. From natural oil finishes and smoked oak treatments to custom stains, reactive finishes, and aged patina effects, our reclaimed wood flooring collections can be tailored to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Because reclaimed wood flooring contains unique grain movement, aged texture, mineral streaking, and authentic patina, every floor reacts differently to color and finish treatments. Our reclaimed wood flooring consultants work directly with architects, interior designers, builders, and homeowners to create custom finishes that enhance the natural beauty of reclaimed oak, heart pine, white pine, Douglas fir, and other reclaimed species.

You’ll never have to settle for a stain or finish that is simply “close enough.” Our team can help match flooring to cabinetry, paint selections, stone, fabric swatches, and architectural finishes to create a cohesive flooring system tailored specifically for your project.

Our custom sampling process typically takes 10–14 business days. For projects with tighter timelines, we also maintain a large collection of pre-developed reclaimed wood flooring samples featuring natural oil finishes, UV matte finishes, wire brushed textures, and custom architectural color treatments developed through years of collaboration with leading architects, designers, and reclaimed wood flooring manufacturers.

FINISH

PREFINISHED UV MATTE & NATURAL OIL FINISHES

Most Reclaimed Wood NYC flooring collections are available in UV matte and UV natural oil prefinished options designed for luxury residential, hospitality, and architectural interiors. These factory-applied finishes combine the authentic appearance of reclaimed wood with enhanced durability, consistency, and simplified installation.

UV matte finishes provide a clean low-sheen appearance that preserves the natural texture and character of reclaimed wood flooring, while UV natural oil finishes enhance grain movement, aged patina, and the organic warmth of antique materials.

Prefinished reclaimed wood flooring is especially popular in Manhattan penthouses, Tribeca lofts, hospitality interiors, Greenwich CT residences, and other high-end architectural projects where durability, efficiency, and refined aesthetics are priorities.

  • Recommended Sheen: Matte and ultra matte finishes are most commonly specified to preserve the authentic architectural appearance of reclaimed wood flooring.

  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance includes dry mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning using manufacturer-approved hardwood floor cleaners.

POLYURETHANE

Polyurethane remains one of the most durable and practical finish systems for site-finished reclaimed wood flooring, particularly in commercial, hospitality, and high-traffic residential environments where long-term performance and simplified maintenance are priorities.

For unfinished reclaimed wood flooring, stain and protective topcoats are applied after installation and sanding, allowing architects and designers greater flexibility in developing custom finishes tailored to the project. Site-finished polyurethane systems are commonly specified for reclaimed oak, heart pine, white pine, Douglas fir, and mixed reclaimed species flooring where durability, color consistency, and low maintenance are essential.

We typically recommend high-quality water-based polyurethane systems that provide excellent clarity while preserving the natural texture, grain movement, and architectural character of reclaimed wood flooring. Because polyurethane forms a protective layer over the wood surface, wear generally occurs within the finish itself rather than directly on the reclaimed wood.

Over time, floors may eventually require recoating or refinishing to restore and extend the life of the flooring system.

  • Recommended SheenMatte and Satin finishes are most commonly specified to preserve the natural appearance and architectural character of reclaimed wood flooring.

  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance includes dry mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning using manufacturer-approved hardwood floor cleaners. Avoid waxes, oils, or ammonia-based products that may damage the finish.

HARD-WAX OIL

Hardwax oil finishes are highly sought after for site-finished reclaimed wood flooring because of their natural matte appearance and ability to enhance the texture, grain movement, saw marks, and aged patina of antique wood.  Frequently specified in luxury residences, historic restorations, brownstones, lofts, and architecturally driven interiors throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Tribeca, Greenwich CT, and the Hamptons, hardwax oil creates a warm, organic aesthetic that preserves the authentic character of reclaimed materials.

Unlike polyurethane finishes, hardwax oil penetrates into the reclaimed wood surface rather than forming a heavy protective layer on top. This allows the flooring to maintain a softer, more natural appearance while offering the ability to spot repair scratches and wear without refinishing the entire floor.

Hardwax oil systems are especially popular for reclaimed white oak, heart pine, white pine, and Douglas fir flooring where maintaining the historic texture and natural movement of the wood is an important part of the overall architectural design.

Because hardwax oil requires ongoing maintenance and periodic refreshing, it is generally best suited for residential and lower-traffic architectural interiors where long-term care can be properly maintained.

  • Recommended Sheen: Ultra Matte and Natural Oil finishes are most commonly specified to preserve the authentic appearance and aged character of reclaimed wood flooring.

  • Maintenance: Regular cleaning and periodic oil maintenance are essential to preserve the beauty, performance, and longevity of hardwax oil finished reclaimed wood floors.

FAQ'S

Are There Any Limitations as to Where Reclaimed Wood Flooring Can Be Installed?

Reclaimed Wood NYC flooring systems are suitable for both residential and commercial interiors throughout New York City, Brooklyn, Greenwich CT, Alpine NJ, the Hamptons, and the surrounding tri-state area. Depending on the construction and specification of the flooring system, reclaimed wood flooring can often be installed at, above, or below grade, including over radiant heat systems, concrete slabs, and plywood subfloors.

Because reclaimed wood flooring projects vary significantly based on species, construction, environmental conditions, and project requirements, our team reviews each application individually to help determine the best flooring system for long-term performance.

Why Do I Need a “Cutting Allowance”?

During installation, reclaimed wood flooring boards often require additional trimming and selective layout adjustments to account for natural variation, milling tolerances, and architectural installation patterns such as herringbone, chevron, and parquet. To ensure full material coverage, we typically recommend ordering at least 10% additional material beyond the measured square footage.

What is Acclimation and How Does It Apply to Reclaimed Wood Flooring?

Wood flooring naturally absorbs and releases moisture based on environmental conditions. Depending on the species, construction, site conditions, and moisture content of the project, acclimation may be necessary prior to installation.

For reclaimed wood flooring systems, acclimation procedures can vary significantly and should be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. Proper environmental conditioning and moisture control are critical components of long-term flooring performance.

What is the Difference Between Solid and Engineered Reclaimed Wood Flooring?

Reclaimed Wood NYC offers both solid and engineered reclaimed wood flooring systems depending on the project requirements and installation conditions. Engineered reclaimed wood flooring is often specified for projects involving radiant heat, concrete subfloors, wider plank formats, and environments where enhanced dimensional stability is desired.

Solid reclaimed wood flooring is frequently selected for traditional installations, historic restorations, and projects seeking thicker wear layers and long-term refinishability. Both constructions preserve the authentic texture, character, and architectural appearance of reclaimed wood flooring.

Is Reclaimed Wood NYC Eco-Friendly?

Yes. Reclaimed wood flooring is considered one of the most environmentally responsible flooring options available because it repurposes antique and previously used wood materials rather than relying solely on newly harvested lumber.

Reclaimed Wood NYC works with reclaimed wood mills, specialty manufacturers, and environmentally conscious suppliers committed to responsible sourcing, indoor air quality standards, and sustainable manufacturing practices.

What is the Lead Time for Reclaimed Wood Flooring Materials?

Lead times vary depending on species availability, custom milling requirements, finish development, project scope, and current production schedules. Custom reclaimed wood flooring projects often involve specialized sourcing and manufacturing processes, so lead times are confirmed individually at the time of specification and purchase.
