FAQ'S

Where Can Reclaimed Wood Flooring Be Installed?

Our reclaimed wood flooring systems are suitable for both residential and commercial projects and can be installed in a wide range of environments.

Depending on the construction selected, our flooring can be installed:

  • At, above, or below grade

  • Over concrete or plywood subfloors

  • Over radiant heat systems

  • In lofts, brownstones, apartments, modern homes, commercial spaces, and historic restorations

  • In kitchens, living areas, bedrooms, and many other interior environments

Our team can help specify the proper reclaimed flooring system for your project's specific conditions.

Can I Purchase Reclaimed Wood Flooring Directly From You?

Yes. The best way to purchase reclaimed wood flooring is directly through Reclaimed Wood NYC and Huggins Wood Floor Specialist.

We work directly with homeowners, architects, interior designers, builders, and developers throughout the United States. Our team provides:

  • Samples

  • Product guidance

  • Technical consultation

  • Installation and site finishing

With decades of experience in reclaimed wood flooring systems, we assist clients through every stage of the project.

Is All of Your Reclaimed Wood Flooring Available Unfinished?

Yes. All of our reclaimed wood flooring collections are available unfinished.

This allows architects, interior designers, and homeowners to fully customize the appearance of the floor using:

  • Custom stain systems

  • Hardwax oils

  • Reactive finishes

  • Site finishing techniques

  • Water-based finish systems

  • Matte, satin, or natural sheen levels

We also offer professional site finishing services throughout the NYC metropolitan area using environmentally responsible finish systems including Rubio Monocoat, WOCA, and other low-VOC and 0-VOC products.

What is “attic stock”?

Given the custom nature of your new floor, we recommend that you order a small, additional amount of flooring to keep as “attic stock” that can be used to repair or replace boards over the life of your floor, and help you avoid setup fees, additional shipping and longer lead times associated with ordering flooring below our minimum order amounts.

If you are purchasing a floor that will be stained on site, we also recommend that you order an extra gallon of stain. Since stain formulations and colors change on a regular basis, we cannot guarantee the same stain will be available in the future.

Why do I need a “cutting allowance”?

During installation, boards must be cut and fitted to the space, resulting in natural jobsite waste.

For most reclaimed wood flooring projects, we recommend ordering:

  • A minimum 10% cutting allowance for standard layouts

  • Additional material for herringbone, chevron, borders, custom inlays, and complex layouts

Our team can help determine the appropriate waste factor based on your project.

What is acclimation and how does it apply to my project?

Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture based on the surrounding environment.

Prior to installation, reclaimed wood flooring may need to acclimate within the space where it will be installed. This process allows the material to adjust to the expected living conditions of the project.

Proper acclimation helps reduce:

  • Excessive movement

  • Gapping

  • Expansion and contraction issues

Acclimation requirements vary depending on:

  • Species

  • Construction

  • Jobsite conditions

  • Humidity levels

  • Radiant heat systems

Our team and your installer can help guide you through the acclimation process.

What is the difference between your solid wood flooring and engineered wood flooring?

Luxury Wood NYC’s floors are available in ¾” solid, ¾” and 5/8” engineered construction, both with a 4 mm wear layer, and our refinishing warranty guarantees at least three sandings over the life of your floor. The same wood will be used to make your floor whether you choose solid or engineered, so they will be virtually indistinguishable from each other once installed.

Is Reclaimed Wood Flooring Eco-Friendly?

Yes. Reclaimed wood flooring is one of the most environmentally responsible flooring materials available.

By reclaiming and repurposing old-growth wood from historic structures, barns, factories, and industrial buildings, reclaimed flooring helps reduce:

  • Deforestation

  • Material waste

  • Demand for newly harvested lumber

Many reclaimed woods also feature tighter growth rings and greater density than newly harvested lumber due to their old-growth origins.

We also work with environmentally responsible finish systems including:

  • Rubio Monocoat

  • WOCA

  • Low-VOC water-based finishes

  • 0-VOC finish systems

What is the lead time for my material?

Lead times vary depending on:

  • Species availability

  • Quantity

  • Construction type

  • Finish requirements

  • Milling specifications

  • Customization level

Because reclaimed materials are unique and inventory changes frequently, lead times are determined at the time of order.
